The HPI Savage X SS is one of the few build-it-yourself monster truck kits on the market, aimed at R/C enthusiasts who enjoy the process of building and customizing their truck. Standard equipment includes the powerful K4.6 engine with pullstarter, along with an exciting list of new features and updates that make the HPI Savage X SS capable of handling the toughest beating you can throw at it.
Super powerful Nitro Star K4.6 engine pumps out 2.9 horsepower from .28 cubic inches for a top speed of 44 mph and enough power to do wheelies on command! An anodized billet aluminum head keeps it cool during extreme off-road driving, and standard features include true ABC construction using a long-life chromed sleeve, an 8.5mm composite carburetor for high performance and improved high temperature tuning, and a pullstarter for easy starting. The engine is mated to a high performance polished tuned pipe and high flow tube header to help maximize power output.
The entire drivetrain is equipped to handle the K4.6 power. Cast alloy differential cups with steel pin guides are now standard on the front and rear of the truck, delivering unmatched durability and extending the standard maintenance interval of the diffs. All of the internal diff gears are now shimmed for precise mesh, and HPI even shim the outdrive bearings and input shafts for extra precision. Heavy duty diff shafts, cup joints, drive shafts and dogbones are used for maximum strength and durability. And, a hardened steel spur gear with a matching ventilated “racing” clutchbell have been added for the ultimate in drivetrain strength, right out of the box.
To help handle the extra power and speed, HPI beefed up the already legendary toughness of the HPI Savage chassis. The aluminum TVP chassis plates have extra strength in critical areas, and the motor plate is now thicker, using 2.5mm 7075 aircraft quality alloy. The engine mount now has an adjustable nose support for the engine, designed to prevent the engine from moving during hard landings or crashes. Even the nylon skid plates and bumpers have been modified for extra durability to securely hold the suspension pins and extra sealing has been added to prevent dirt from getting into the differentials. To beef up the braking, dual stainless steel disc brake kit comes standard, featuring two vented stainless discs and a machined steel brake hub. An adjustable cam-type servo saver delivers quick steering response and added servo protection.
High grip Dirt Bonz tires are 40% lighter than standard HPI Savage tires for tenacious off-road grip and quicker acceleration. Chrome Warlock wheels are standard, mounted on proven-tough 17mm cast alloy hex hubs and new steel nylock wheel screws with serrated fins that prevent the wheel nuts from vibrating off. And the great “X” features are there too… easy diff access, improved radio box, low CG chassis, nylon roll hoop, engine protection cage, adjustable turnbuckles, adjustable shock position, easy access transmission, and a dual stage air filter.
As with past SS kits, the HPI Savage X SS does not include electronics, so owners can customize their Savage exactly how they want it. A clear and trimmed body with pre-cut decals is included so you can do your own custom paint job.

HPI Savage X 4.6 Speed
The new F4.6 powerplant is designed for one thing and one thing only – huge amounts of horsepower! Nearly 3hp, in fact! Enough horsepower to get the Savage X 4.6 up to 45mph (73kph)! And Big Block TORQUE is always on tap, just pull the throttle and you’ll know you’re not driving a small block. You want speed? You want torque? You’ve got it!
The F4.6 engine is a new HPI high-power unit with the proven HPI Nitro Star reliability, featuring 2.9hp from its .28 cubic inch displacement! A purple anodized machined aluminum cooling head keeps the engine cool. Rough off-road terrain and extreme stunts are not a problem with this engine! The F4.6 features true ABC construction (Aluminum piston, Chrome-plated Brass sleeve), 8 port tuning, a 7.5mm composite carburetor, heavy duty triple shoe clutch, plus an updated Roto Start 2 electronic starting system for easy starting. A dual-stage air filter protects the F4.6 from dust and dirt kicked up by the 4WD action!
The F4.6 engine is so fast, in fact, that HPI designers made significant improvements to the chassis, gear cases and other parts of the truck to beef it up so it could handle the extra power! The F4.6 engine pumps out nearly 3 horsepower and sits on an improved engine mount and thicker engine plate to give you more durability and endurance, especially when you’re landing massive jumps!
Drivetrain
HPI designers wanted to make sure the Savage X 4.6 drivetrain could handle the extra power of the Nitro Star F4.6. The Savage drivetrain features a permanent 4WD system and spins on rubber-sealed ball bearings, plus it features an adjustable 2 speed transmission. To add extra strength, aluminum alloy diff cases are now standard on the front and rear differentials, pre-installed and shimmed to extend the maintenance interval of the HPI 4-gear differential. The 17T clutch bell has been modified so it engages the spur gear with extra consistency. A steel spacer is used on the clutch bell, which provides more durability than the brass spacer. The adjustable slipper clutch features a slipper pad made from a more durable material, so there’s less maintenance and more driving!

What Nitro Remote Controlled Monster Truck is the best one to get? HPI Savage X SS or Tamiya Terra Crusher?
The Tamiya Terra Crusher comes with battery starter unit to start the nitro engine and comes standard with a 2 speed transmission with a reverse capability.
The HPI Savage 21 does not have the battery starter unit, and uses a pull-start mechanism. It also does not come with a reverse module, but you can buy both the reverse module and the battery starter unit as optional upgrade parts.
The HPI Savage 21 does have its advantages over the Tamiya Terra Crusher. It has a slightly larger and more powerful more that should make it run faster than the Terra Crusher. The dual chamber tuned pipe will also add horsepower.
What it comes down to is your personal preference. Both nitro monster trucks are similarly priced. The HPI Savage is packaged as faster out of the box, while the Tamiya Crusher is packaged as more fun out of the box (because of the reverse module).
I would buy the HPI Savage X SS, but that is only my opinion! Both are incredible R/C Monster trucks.
The bottom line is: You will have a lot of fun and you get high tech equipment at an affordable price. Buy one now. Better yet buy both!

HPI Savage Suspension Conversion Set

HPI Savage Suspension Conversion Set fits all Savage trucks and includes new Aluminum Upper Arm Braces, Aluminum Knuckles, Aluminum Knuckle Carriers, Aluminum Rear Spindles Carries, Adjustable Upper Arm Set, thread lock, screws, wrench and complete installation instructions.
The conversion set lowers the roll center, improves steering response and provides more suspension tuning options for faster lap times on the race track. With the increase in caster, this gives a more responsive driving input while on the throttle and better turn in capabilities. The machine billet aluminum parts also add strength and durability. All alloy parts are purple for a custom look that matches other HPI factory option parts.
The Aluminum Knuckles and Aluminum Knuckle Carrier add more caster angle for improved handling characteristics. These Aluminum parts increase the strength and durability of the truck.
Aluminum Rear Spindle Carrier is stronger and adds more durability. Built-in toes angle also eliminates the need for the stock toe linkage rod assembly for a simple and clean rear suspension.
Aluminum Upper Arm Brace adjusts the roll cent by changing the location of the inner camber link mounts. This reduces the amount of chassis roll, improving overall on-track performance.
Adjustable Upper Arm Link Set allows you to the tune the front and rear camber angles for the optimum performance.
